    Laser what is it?
Laser stands for "light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation." Lasers work by producing an intense beam of bright light that travels in one direction. The laser beam can vaporize and remove wrinkles, scars, and blemishes; seal blood vessels; or go deeper into skin tissue.

Dermatologists are among the first specialists to use lasers to treat skin disorders.

The laser has the unique ability to produce one specific color (wavelength) of light, which can be varied in its intensity and pulse duration. There are many lasers which have unique purposes (see individual links). The newest laser systems have become remarkably precise and selective, allowing better treatment results and safety levels not previously available.

What kind of lasers are there?
There are a variety of lasers to suit a variety of endpoints in cutaneous laser surgery. Some may be used as a cutting instrument for some type of surgical procedures, or can vaporize off some superficial skin growths. Pulse dye lasers treat vascular lesions, such as spider veins, warts, scars, and stretch marks. The CO2 Erbium-YAG laser is used for sun damage. Your dermatologist will recommend the best laser treatment after an examination.

    Are lasers painful?
Generally speaking, all lasers used for dermatological purposes can be handled with relative comfort in the outpatient setting. The need for a topical or local anesthesia will vary among patients.

Will the laser treatments leave marks on me?
Each patient is different. Redness and scarring depends on the individual and can last from several weeks up to several months, depending on the procedure. Permanent scarring is rare.

Who is a good candidate for laser surgery?
Anyone who has an irregular area of skin is a potential good candidate for laser surgery. You should consult a dermatologist regarding the best course of treatment.
