This common area of complaints may include voice difficulties, such as hoarseness, weakness, breathiness, speech breaks, pitch changes and pain. Swallowing disorders entail pain, dryness, food sticking, foreign body sensation and regurgitation. Initial evaluation includes a thorough history of the disorder, including time of onset, duration, associated factors, recent medications and treatments, and a complete review of other health problems. Your ENT specialist will perform a comprehensive examination to assess the nose, mouth, sinuses, including visualization of the larynx and vocal cords.
Therapy is directed toward the cause of the disorder and may involve medical treatment of sinus disease, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), voice therapy, lifestyle modification and surgery.
